Stereoboard Speaks With Chatty Black Veil Brides At Download 2011 (Interview)

Earlier this year, Black Veil Brides graced the UK with their presence for the first time supporting Murderdolls on their February tour. Recently they returned to play a set at Download Festival just prior to the release of their second album ‘Set The World On Fire’. At Download, Jake, Ashley and CC stopped for a little talk, which turned out to be very chatty thanks to copious amounts of alcohol...
Jake: That guy’s hair is fucking awesome. It’s like someone has coloured him in with a highlighter marker pen. CC: Yeah, it’s like a highlighter pen. Weird.
So how are you guys?
CC: Doing well. Jake: Good, how are you?
I’m okay minus feeling ill.
Jake: Are you nervous?
Not really.
Ashley: Are you sick? Are you gonna throw up?
No...
Ashley: Don’t throw up on me. You can throw up on them, just don’t throw up on me.
It’s being from Scotland. You go somewhere with heat and suddenly you’re dying.
Jake: We’re going to Scotland tomorrow to play Glasgow. Ashley: Is it cold there?
Scotland’s more likely to be cold than here.
Ashley: I don’t like the cold. Jake: The cold’s good though. It breaks through if there’s a little too much heat. Ashley: We’re from California, so we’re used to the sun.
So how is it being back in the UK? Murderdolls in February was your first ever time over here.
Jake: Yep. CC: Yeah, it’s going great, you know. We love it. Jake: We’ve definitely grown. I mean, we came to Europe to play Germany and Copenhagen for the first time. Ashley: CC had some sex with some girls last night that he wouldn’t usually have. CC: Yeah, last night was cool. I enjoyed last night. I don’t remember that. Jake: Did you really? CC: I don’t know, I guess. [laughs] Jake: Did you black out? CC: I don’t know. Jake: If you can’t remember, you blacked out! Ashley: Blacked out and banged out. Jake: He banged out. [laughs] CC: Apparently, I banged out... Jake: He’s actually dead. CC: Yes, I am dead. Jake: He’s like a robot.
How are you looking forward to playing the Cathouse? It’s a small venue but you’d be headlining your own show far from home.
Jake: I don’t know what the venue is like but I’m stoked to be playing there. Ashley: It’s like a festival run for us and then we’re playing these two headlining shows in Denmark and then tomorrow in Glasgow and they’re both sold out, so that’s cool. Jake: Yeah, we had never been to Denmark before and we played a sold out show and the kids were just crazy. Something’s working right. CC: So we’ll see you there tomorrow! Ashley: CC took his dick out! Jake: Something smells really good here. CC: I think it’s her. I want to eat her up. Ashley: Are we making you uncomfortable yet?
No...
Ashley: You said you weren’t nervous, you look a little nervous. Jake: We’re making her nervous, that’s awesome.
I’m not nervous, I’ve just never done a festival like this before, so I’m getting used to it.
Jake: What’s the difference between a festival and a club show?
At a club show there’s usually one person you contact, go to the band, plus it’s a venue I know so it’s fine. Whereas here there’s so many people, it’s loud, my phone’s dying. It’s more finding people and keeping track.

Nah, it’s okay...Are you looking forward to your album coming out on Monday?
CC: Yeah, of course! Jake: Yeah, we’ve been waiting for it to come out for a while- Ashley: LOOK! We’ve already got it. [waves album around] Jake: Yeah, we are have it! Ashley: Losers don’t have it. Jake: We are have it? That doesn’t make sense. We have it! Ashley: Na na na na na na. I have the record and you don’t! Jake: I don’t have it, but I do have CC’s disease. CC: What disease? Ashley: CC’s disease! CC: I can’t talk. We all just drank ourselves retarded because we won last night at the Kerrang! awards.
Yeah, if you look around here you have the biggest-
Ashley: Penises. We have the biggest penises around here.
Yes, you have the biggest penises... Biggest banners in the arena too.
Jake: We have the biggest penises. CC: Major label. Jake: We have major label penises. Ashley: Major label, metal penises. CC: Major label penises... But yeah, we’re definitely looking forward to our album being released. We think everybody will like it. There’s some metal songs, there’s the obvious marketable, radio type songs. Something for everybody. Jake: Slow songs, violent strings and guitar solos. Ashley: Banjo. Jake: It’s all in there. Ashley: Harmonica. Jake: I think everything is better this time around. Everything is bigger, better, faster. CC: Harder. Ashley: It makes me harder, wetter. Jake: Wetter. [laughs] Ashley: Our album’s a lot wetter this time. [laughs] It gets you off. Jake: It’ll make people a lot wetter this time. CC: WOAH! Jake: And it’ll make me hard.
Well, obviously this album will make people harder and wetter than the first album, but how else is it different? [laughs]
Jake: Harder! [laughs] Ashley: Wetter! [laughs] Jake: It certainly makes me a lot harder than the first one. But yeah, better song writing, I think. We’re just better song writers. We feel like a new band. Ashley: This is like our first album. Jake: Yeah, this is like our first album. It’s probably what it should have been the first time, but it’s our second one, so cool! It’s better than the first. Ashley: Our first major label debut. CC: And we thought we should call it ‘Black Veil Brides Greatest Hits’ because every song we do we’re like ‘SIIIICK!’ but we can’t. Jake: Every song on the album is our favourite song. It’s really hard to pick one. I’m not trying to be cocky, but I think we’re awesome.
How is it having one of your new tracks used in the Transformers soundtrack?
Ashley: Yep! CC: Our title track. Jake: ‘Set The World On Fire’ is being used. It’s cool.
I’m not sure if you’re big Transformers fans, but they tend to have really good soundtracks.
Jake: I’ve seen the movies and I think they’re cool. I know they’re really huge movies. I think I have to see it to believe it. Ashley: Do you know who’s also in the Transformers movies? Megan Fox. Jake: Oh, Megan Fox! CC: Do you know who else is in that movie? That other girl... Ashley: I know she’s not meant to be in the new one but still... Megan Fox. CC: It’s something different, but yeah we’re very stoked about that. ‘No way, shut up, forget about it!’ Jake: ‘Forget about it.’ CC: ‘Optimus Prime? No way.’ Jake: ‘No way.’
So are you excited to play Download this weekend?
Jake: Absolutely. CC: Yeah.
I know a lot of people who are coming mainly to see you.
Jake: That’s awesome. Ashley: Hopefully they take their tops off.
Well if your new album makes them as wet as you seem to think it will, they’ll probably do that.
CC: I never thought of that. Ashley: Ah, but they don’t have it yet! Jake: Our album’s not out yet though.
But you’ll be playing new songs live...
Ashley: Oh, wow, I never thought of that. Jake: We’re playing 5- CC: Hundred. Jake: Yes, we’re playing 500 new songs live. We should be playing all new songs, damn it!
Are you looking forward to playing Warped Tour? There always seems to be a level of pop-punk there these last few years, but you’re obviously a little different to that.
Jake: Oh, we’re not pop-punk at all. We’re not pop-punk. Ashley: What is pop-punk? Jake: That’s like New Found Glory type, right?
Yep.
Jake: Oh, we’re definitely not pop-punk. But I am stoked for Warped Tour. We’ve never played it. It’s just going to be very hot. So besides the heat, I’m totally stoked for that. Can’t wait. CC: I’ve never actually been to a Warped Tour before. And I have to poop right now. Jake: What?! CC: I’m gonna go poop on Warped Tour. Jake: He’s looking forward to the portapotties at Warped Tour. CC: So stoked. No but we are excited though, it’s going to be great.
Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to that’s coming up?
Jake: I can’t wait for January to go to America and go to Brazil. I love Brazil. I love Brazilian women. I also love Asians, Japanese... We’re going there so that’ll be cool.~ CC: Ashley loves all women. Jake: Well yeah, you can’t go wrong there, can you? I’m just being specific. You can’t go wrong with women! CC: I beg to differ. I’ve had a few in my day. Jake: I don’t know if they were women, dude. CC: No, they were all women. I’ve never made that mistake and been like “Oops”. No, that’s never happened. Ashley: You know what I like? I like rock ‘n’ roll. Jake: I like sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Ashley: Yeah, sweet. Jake: Party. CC: Warped Tour, Download. Ashley: [singing] Ding, dang who’s your boss? Jake: [joining in] Ding, dang who’s your boss?
Last question since we need to wrap up: is there anything else you’d quickly like to add?
