Kissy Sell Out’s new album is classic camp electro. Half a decade ago Wild Romance’s sound would have complimented sound systems on dance floors across the country. Today however, the most fitting output is through a mobile phone on the back of the 388 bus to Hackney.
That’s not to say there aren’t a few hints at more relevant and current dance music. But the grime and dub references seem token at best while the retro house styling of 'Redrinkulous' is as absurd and empty as it’s title.
It is all good clean fun though. In the same way that Radio 1 (where Kissy DJs) is excused for pandering to the lowest common denominator, 'Wild Romance' has its feel-OK moments.
But the album is full of false starts that break promises of some nice originality. 'Wild Warehouse' starts out well with some tribal MC-ing and dirty synth work, but it eventually submits to the same clichés that the rest of the album falls victim to.
'Homesick', the tale of one man’s quest for masturbation material of the lady he is courting is the rotten cherry on the flat, unrisen cake. “Girl, hit me with that email, text or tweet with that naughty little photo that will make my d**k go bleep” is followed by “I just wanna jack that, jack that, jack that”. Chivalry might not be quite dead, but electronic music probably is after this effort.
If final track 'Alone On the Rooftop' is the come down piece, then fair play to Mr Sell Out. It’s a lingering track with a hint of some interesting string and synth work, but its conclusion comes as quite a relief.
If 'Wild Romance' proves anything, it’s that good DJs don’t always make good music.
