It’s often the case that the runner up in talent shows go on to have equally, if not more, lucrative careers in the music business than the winners themselves... JLS, Adam Lambert, Diana Vickers... but there is none more so than the man who came 2nd in 2009’s X Factor - Olly Murs. With numerous hits already under his belt including ‘Thinking Of Me’, ‘Please Don’t Let Me Go’ and the more acoustically based ‘Busy’, Olly has teamed up with Rizzle Kicks for a new musical experiment with his latest offering ‘Heart Skips A Beat’.
As staccato keys offer the backing throughout the majority of the track, it’s clear he’s keen to test out his capability with a variety of sounds. In a side-step from the usual bouncy, upbeat tracks he has opted for a cool, calm range of infectiousness that takes you by surprise. Olly Murs, the cheeky chap, musically rendezvousing with rappers? In the minds of many, this should not work, but in testament to him, he has well and truly pulled it off.
This is not to say that Olly should drop everything he’s doing for some slick beats and raps, but it does open the door to many more opportunities by proving he has the versatility to push the boundaries and successfully experiment in further genres, even if it’s just with collaborators. As previously stated, it’s not as overly bouncy as his previous hits but with that undertone throughout to cause a sense of familiarity in his tracks, it’ll easily slot itself into his hit collection.
