N-Dubz star Dappy has recorded a track with Queen guitarist Brian May – and Dappy has described it as a ‘tribute’ to late soul singer Amy Winehouse, as well as other members of the infamous 27 club.
‘Rockstar’ has received a lot of criticism from hardcore Queen fans, who are perplexed and some upset that their favourite guitarist would work with an urban grime/rap artist, but N-Dubz fans are heaping on the praise, and its generally doing well in terms of YouTube ‘likes’.
Now, Dappy has told the Daily Star about the song, explaining that he wrote it as a tribute to Winehouse and many other rockstars and musicians who died at the young age of 27 – forming what is now known as the 27 club.
“It's all about paying homage to the 27 Club and amazing artists such as Amy Winehouse,” Dappy told the tabloid paper. “It's a song about people getting to their lowest but it talks about turning a negative into a positive.”
He went on to talk about his work with May, saying “Brian bigged me up for my last single and said I should win an Ivor Novello for lyrics. So I got his email and contacted him. It was a coincidence that the track was called 'Rockstar'. He told me, 'You are a very different artist and unique, so carry on doing what you're doing. There's nobody else challenging you'.”
