Since appearing on X Factor in 2010, we’ve always known Cher Lloyd liked to break the conventions – she was one of, if not, the first contestants to rap mid-song – now it seems she’s breaking the conventions of spelling, with her latest track ‘Want U Back’.
When making her fame on X Factor it was clear to all, including Cher Lloyd herself, that she was pretty similar to marmite; you would either love her or hate her. Her debut single, ‘Swagger Jagger’, definitely confirmed that, but none of us were prepared for how catchy it would be. It would seem that that’s what Cher Lloyd’s niche is – no longer should we think of her as the girl who came 4th on X Factor, instead we should think of her as the girl who has the ability to release incredibly catchy songs that will drive us mad, but in a good way.
The lyrics for ‘Want U Back’ leave a lot to be desired and are quite childish, yet some of us are still going to find ourselves relating to them. The song is about seeing your ex with another person, seeing them take that person to the places they took you, feeling a bit miffed about the whole thing and realising you made a mistake in letting them go. The concept appears quite grown up but some of the lyrics say otherwise. For example, there’s nothing mature about insulting someone’s jeans (“Tryna rock them ugly jeans”), yet it somehow works for this song.
This single also sees the appearance of Astro; a 15 year old boy who was a contestant on USA’s X Factor. He raps about love and all the other things a typical 15 year old has experience with. Oh, wait… They don’t, do they? The song would probably be a lot better without it, in all honesty.
The video is brilliantly shot and sees Cher Lloyd looking perhaps the best she’s ever looked. The video shows her seeing the ex and his new girlfriend out and about, and doing all she can to mess things up. Let’s face it; most of us have at least wanted to do that.
There’s no escaping that this song is going to be huge; whether people like it or not, it’s too catchy not to go far. Okay, so the lyrics are immature, but there’s no denying Cher Lloyd has an incredible voice and releases some mighty catchy tunes!
