Hyde Park Concerts Under Threat Due To Noise Complaints

Future open-air concerts at London's Hyde Park could be under threat after local residents complained about the level of noise at 2011's shows.

Reports from NME have emerged, claiming that residents living on nearby Mayfair have complained about the noise generated by Hyde Park's Summer calendar of live events. Each year Hyde Park plays host to a series of massive live music concerts, with Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and Rihanna all confirmed to play there this Summer. In addition, a variety of Olympic related events are also set to be staged in the park grounds.

A report claims that 109 complaints were received in Summer 2011, a figure that is double the number received in 2010. As a result Westminster council have requested that the number of events staged at the Hyde Park should be cut from 13 to 6 each Summer, with noise levels reduced from 75 decibels to 73 decibels. Calls have also been made to reduce concert capacities from 80,000 to 50,000.

London's Evening Standard newspaper features quotes from two residents unhappy with the noise, Mike Dunn, vice-chairman of the Mayfair Residents Group says: "It's pretty bad. There are two issues for us - the number of concerts and noise they're allowed to make. If you sit here with the windows open on a hot day, you can hear every word."

Meanwhile, Councillor Glenys Roberts said: "I like to watch the men's Wimbledon final but there's always a concert on that Sunday and the noise completely drowns out the television."

A meeting will take place tomorrow, Friday 17th February, to decide on new restrictions for concerts held in London's Hyde Park.
