Es Muss Sein, meaning ‘It Must Be’ in German, is the nom de plume taken by talented Kent teenager Poppy Wilson. The singer-songwriter’s self-titled debut EP was released on April 1st and from the sounds of this three-track production, this is certainly not the last we will hear from her.
'Es Muss Sein' opens with ‘Sail’, a delicately beautiful track that oozes quality. It is such a gentle song that conveys a message of hope and promise through the stunning vocals of the teenager. The less-is-more approach is epitomised by the accompanying acoustic guitar, which Wilson just uses to give the slow moving, well thought out number a structure. The lyrics are shrouded in sadness with bursts of optimism, as the defiant words of Es Muss Sein are sung powerfully at points in the song to just give it the boost it needs to flow.
With the slight nature of ‘Sail’ still in your mind, next track ‘Seeping’ comes through with a simple yet effective guitar part that soon makes way for that mesmerising voice. The tremendous vocal talent combined with the lyrical ability of an artist much older than herself is so impressive. ‘Seeping’ feels a little more uplifting as the guitar-part, which has repeated throughout the song, is expanded and aided by a well-timed more melodic accompaniment to end the song.
Final track ‘Those Eyes’ follows the very minimalist approach of the EP, no thrills or spills just a raw ability that by this time in listening to the debut effort puts you at ease. Again lyrically, Wilson shows a maturity far beyond her age as she accompanies her heartfelt vocals with her trusty stripped-back acoustic guitar. The young singer-songwriter is obviously confident in her vocals and lyrics as in ‘Those Eyes’ there are more extended notes that just allow her to wear her heart on her sleeve.
As a young female singer songwriter, 'Es Muss Sein' is going to be compared to artists like Lykke Li and Laura Marling to name but a few. However, you should take her for what she is, a raw talent with a huge amount of promise.
