Frantic Alice - Frantic Alice (EP Review)

In their reasonably short time together, Milton Keynes hard rockers, Frantic Alice, have been accumulating their achievements fast. Though young in years, they nailed their place as one of the five finalists in the Marshall Ultimate Band Contest last November and have now produced 'Frantic Alice' the EP.

ImageTogether, Jakk Vanity, vocals and guitar; Jim Terror, guitar; Rob Dix, bass and Allonby, drums, have that hungry sound, brimming with heavy rock, metal and punk. They describe themselves as the bastard lovechild of Jimi Hendrix and Courtney Love and raised by Alice Cooper. This becomes apparent when the first song on the six track EP, 'Misses Misery' opens expectantly and proceeds to crash through the speakers. Following on, are tracks that fall in a similar “smash up” vein with the use of some great guitar solos, wah wah pedals, groove laden riffs and drum battering; and if we are permitted to widen the family circle somewhat, then Slash and Guns N Roses would be the Godfathers too.

'I Feel Nothing' with its Deep Purplesque 'Smoke on the Water' chorus and 'How to Be' are suitably short sharp shocks. After the ferocity of the first three tracks 'Tear Me Down' recharges briefly with what heralds a possible ballad which is quickly denied and soon launches into another cantering tempo that is finished off with a riff like a machine gun attack. 'So In Love' is a song that spits spite but it is a great jump about song with a good chorus to chant along to as well.

Live, Frantic Alice deliver a great set and connect with their audience well. This recorded collection, is nothing new or out of the ordinary; the riffs have all been done before; the tempo is repetitive and the vocal range is “samey”. The last song on the EP however, changes this opinion slightly. 'Memories' is, well, the most memorable track in my view. It abandons the all Guns N Roses blazing approach; ditches metal and poignantly transcends through different moods and interesting arrangements. This song also demonstrates Jakk Vanity’s vocal capabilities that are not apparent elsewhere and gives the listener a reassuring close.

In all, this is an EP busting with energy and cocksure attitude with a few hidden surprises. Give it a go and see them live!
