Burzum founder Varg Vikernes - who was jailed back in 1994 after murdering his former friend and fellow black metal musician Euronymous - has been arrested in France, on ‘suspicion of preparing a major terrorist attack’.
Vikernes, a known right wing sympathiser, was picked up by French police in Corrèze after his wife bought four rifles. The BBC reports that the French interior ministry described him as ‘a potential threat to society’.
Varg - real name Kristian - also received a copy of a manifesto from Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian extremist responsible for the mass murder of 77 people in an attack on a youth camp and an Oslo bombing in 2011.
An official said: "There were several suspicions that made the services fear he could possibly carry out a violent act."
Vikernes was released from prison in 2009 and was also implicated in a spate of church burnings that became synonymous with the Norwegian black metal scene. The 40-year-old is the sole member of Burzum, a black metal project he started back in 1988.
