The Whigs - Enjoy The Company (Album Review)

Wednesday, 24 July 2013 Written by Yasmin La Ronde

Losing a founding member to MGMT’s touring band after the release of your first record is hard, and equally, making it through to the other side is an accomplishment. Hats off, then, to the Whigs. Their fourth album ‘Enjoy the Company’, reveals a new-found confidence in what they do best.

This is an album that accompanies festival season perfectly. It flows with a tinge of the southern rock that keeps the Whigs’ music feeling alive, while incorporating a softer pace and another layer to their triumphant sound.

‘Enjoy the Company’ is the follow-up to 2010’s ‘In The Dark’ and from the very first notes, it’s clear that it’s one of the better albums to come from the band.

Staying Alive erupts with shredding guitars and smashing drums, and is a euphoric, perfect way to kick start a refreshing album.

The whole record is infused with a country attitude that gives it added drive, something that has been missing from the Whigs’ arsenal for a couple of years.

They also show that they can slow things down and Couple of Kids is a low-key version of their sound that really works.

This album shows a different side to The Whigs, with a mature element to their eccentric sound. There’s no fluttering around or forced elements shoved in - it is just three guys having fun and doing what they do best. If you’re looking for something to jump around to then you’ve found it.
