‘Wolverines’, I Am The Avalanche’s third studio record, marks the passing of time in a slightly different manner than its predecessor, ‘Avalanche United’, did. That album arrived after a protracted six year wait and reflected a sprawling writing process, its numerous high points never quite getting it together to make a go of things.
That’s where album three has things worked out. This is, by some distance, the most tight-knit collection that the band have assembled, even if that means that some of the more brash moments that lit up ‘Avalanche United’ have been jettisoned.
‘Wolverines’ is unabashedly anthemic, its driving, mid-paced rhythms and thick guitars backing up the grittiest, perhaps best, vocal performance of VinnieCaruana’s career. We’re not talking the screeches of his techyhardcore band, Peace’d Out, but more in terms of some beneficial weathering.
He recounts recent personal trials - notably a serious back injury on The Shape I’m In - and romantic visions with the same straightforward candour that’s become something of a calling card, his words often still informed by the New York hardcore scene that he came up in. Friendship, overcoming adversity and positivity are all recurring themes here.
With production duties handled by Brett Romnes, the band’s drummer, there’s a sense that this record has emerged fully formed. Its 10 songs head into the sunset after just over half an hour, and there’s really no room for messing around. Do the simple things well, and rewards will follow. Here’s proof.
