Creepoid - Cemetery Highrise Slum (Album Review)

Tuesday, 23 June 2015 Written by Laura Johnson

‘Cemetery Highrise Slum’ is Creepoid’s third time around the block and on it the Philadelphians have managed to fine tune their gloriously gloomy mix of grunge and shoegaze. But, don’t wander along this path without expecting the quartet to dash off on tangents with scant regard for whether you’re interested in following them.

American Smile sets the ‘90s tone that the rest of the album follows, with comparisons to Cave In instantly apparent. Devil In The Subtext provides a much-needed pick up in pace, its percussion skittering like a heartbeat, but as quickly as Creepoid work you up, they bring you back down. Anna Troxell’s mournful vocals on Fingernails signal a return to the wonderful woe that has become their trademark.

They lose their way on Seams, veering from what seems a clearly lit route, but Creepoid’s ability to descend into what feels like an unstructured abyss before pulling back from the brink does work in their favour at times.

Dried Out shows their true potential. If only they would swap these high energy levels for some of the record’s understated and sometimes monotonous melodies. It’s not until Tell The Man that they truly grab you again, with the preceding tracks trailing off into fade outs, lacking any obvious cadence.

There is no doubt that Creepoid have created an intentionally dreary sound, one that they have worked hard to take into new territory since the release of ‘Horse Heaven’. As they say themselves on the opener: “You’re searching for your voice, but you barely make a sound.” It’s clear this is a band happy to find success by sneaking in the back door rather than bashing through the front. Unfortunately, what some may consider subtle others may deem a little boring.

Creepoid Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Tue June 23 2015 - NEW YORK New York - Mercury Lounge (USA)
