The Sidekicks are full of surprises. Each of their records has represented a change in approach from its predecessor while remaining, thanks to an almost indefinable charm and Steve Ciolek’s way with a melody, unmistakably them.
‘Runners In The Nerved World’ is perhaps the biggest statement they’ve made to date. Released by punk royalty, namely Brett Gurewitz and Epitaph, earlier this year, it found them at their most analytical and also their most musically expressive. Taking the honesty that characterised ‘Awkward Breeds’ and training it on the band’s place in the here and now, it’s one of the year’s best records.
The Sidekicks are currently on the road with the excellent Great Cynics and kicked off a run of UK shows at Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach last night, with both bands heavy on the singalongs and nervous energy. Pre-show, we caught up with Ciolek for a couple of stripped back tunes, namely ‘Runners...’ highlight The Kid Who Broke His Wrist and Stay, which was paired with Grace for a single release a few years back.
