Hinds - Leave Me Alone (Album Review)

Monday, 11 January 2016 Written by Jennifer Geddes

Hinds’ debut album manages to capture the feeling of both the party and the aftermath. Its songs detail late nights spent drinking beer and flirting with boys just as they pick over the next day’s hangover and accompanying emotional turmoil.

Vocal duties are shared by Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote , whose voices reflect their relationship. Their words sound like a conversation between best friends who talk over one another and finish the other’s sentences. It’s this quality, alongside a lo-fi aesthetic that highlights feedback and fuzzy vocals, that fills this album with raucous energy.

‘Leave Me Alone’ also contains some excellent, catchy guitar-pop melodies, the kind that you find yourself absentmindedly humming. Bamboo, the first song the band released back in 2013, set the blueprint for what was to follow with jangling hooks, excitable vocals and a gentle hiss. Castigadas En El Granero and San Diego are more upbeat but don’t stray too far from the formula, while Fat Calmed Kiddos pushes the band’s more boisterous side.

Many of the songs here have already been released as singles - covering the band’s history  from when they were a duo called Deers up to this point - so it was always possible that ‘Leave Me Alone’ might end up sounding like a disjointed compilation. That isn’t the case.

In fact, the instrumental Solar Gap, with its slow lullaby air, and And I Will Send You Flowers Back, a sad, swooning ballad, more than hold their own against the singles and make this release into a consistent piece of work in its own right.

For such a young band, both in terms of their age and their short history, Hinds have a good grasp of who they are and what they want to sound like, making up for their lack of experience with their instruments with heaps of enthusiasm and great little garage-pop tunes.
