Loyle Carner has dropped a new single.
Yesterday was produced by Madlib and marks the London artist's first material of 2020, following his 'Not Waving, But Drowning' album, released in 2019.
The track marries skewed vocal samples with discordant horns over a relaxed beat, while lyrically tackling issues around political and social discrimination. Carner said:
"It’s no secret Madlib is my musical hero. I wrote this almost 2 years ago, but at first had trouble with clearing the sample and thought it would never see the light of day.
"It’s really just about what it is to be black and white, in a world where you pretty much have to be one or the other.
"It hurts the way I felt about my race back then, is the same way I feel now. Nothing’s changed since my last entry, nothing’s changed since the last century.
"I hope that soon this song is nothing more than a reminder of a different time, and collectively we’re able to move forward to a time of more respect, acceptance and understanding."
Head below to check out the song's video, which he directed with his brother Ryan.
Carner will appear at Newcastle's Exhibition Park in spring 2021 for This Is Tomorrow festival. He's also set to headline Sundown Festival at Norfolk Showground in September
Meanwhile, back in the summer he teamed up with Joesef for the Glasgow vocalist's song I Wonder Why.
