Saturday, 26 March 2022 Written by Laura Johnson

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has died aged 50.

The band broke the news after they were unable to play their set at a festival in Bogota, Colombia. No cause of death has been revealed. The statement reads:

"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in 1997, stepping up when they needed a replacement drummer for the recording of ’The Colour and the Shape’. Prior to that, he was touring with Alanis Morissette.

Foo Fighters released their latest album, ’Medicine At Midnight’, in 2021. This year, they released their first film, a comedy-horror called Studio 666.

Alongside his successfull career with Foo Fighters, Hawkins also pursued his own musical projects that would see him sing lead vocals as well as drum, releasing three albums as Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, the latest being 2019’s ’Get The Money’. He also formed hard rock band The Birds of Satan and released a self-titled album in 2014.

Hawkins was a sought after talent, and played drums on tracks for some big names, including Queen’s Brian May, Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson, and Slash.

There has been an outpouring of tributes from the music world since the news broke, including sombre words from Ozzy Osbourne, Questlove and Brian May.
