Years And Years' Olly Alexander To Represent UK At Eurovision 2024

Monday, 18 December 2023 Written by Jon Stickler

Olly Alexander has been announced as the UK's Eurovision entrant for 2024.

The Years and Years frontman and actor made the surprise announcement during his appearance on the Strictly Come Dancing final, where he read out the terms and conditions for viewers who wished to vote for their Strictly winner. In a subsequent statement, the 33-year-old said:

“I’ve loved watching Eurovision ever since I was a little kid and I’m beyond excited to be taking part next year. As a young boy I always looked forward to this incredible event of unbridled joy, the wonderfully chaotic mix of musical styles, theatrical performances, heartfelt emotion and humour. I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible, it shall be an honour! I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”

Alexander previously appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, when he performed his Galantis collaboration, Sweet Talker.

The singer has not yet revealed the song he will perform, though we do know it was co-written with Danny L Harle. It's hoped the entry will improve on the UK's disappointing performance earlier this year, when Mae Muller came second to last.

Years and Years have achieved five UK top 10 singles and two number one albums over the past decade, with the latest being 'Night Call' in 2022.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will take place in Malmö, Sweden in May, after singer Loreen won this year's trophy with the pop track Tattoo.
