Kali Uchis keeps moving. The Colombian-American singer only recently finished touring her last album, ‘Red Moon In Venus’, but she’s already back with her second predominantly Spanish-language release, ‘Orquídeas’.

A little over three years on from the arrival of ‘Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios)’, ‘Orquídeas’ offers a head-spinning mix of sounds, moving from bolero to reggaetón and merengue across its 14 tracks.

Uchis’s vocals, and a litany of guest features, from artists including Karol G, Rauw Alejandro and Peso Pluma, rise to meet the mood at every turn, from the delicate tones of ¿Comó Así? and high drama of The Mata to the posturing verses of Muñekita.

Her tales of seduction and self-worth are as sexy as they are sumptuous, and the rich production gives every song urgency and potency, making this perhaps Uchis’s most crucial effort to date.

Described as kicking off a “new era” for her music, there's certainly an air of freedom and abandon to the record, an attitude informed as much by alleged past run-ins with suits attempting to shun her heritage as by her rapid rise through the ranks of contemporary R&B.

‘Orquídeas’ feels as though it was made to be felt and shared, whether that's in standalone passages that resonate with the listeners’ own struggles and experiences, or in the TikTok trend readiness of its brightest moments. At this point, Kali Uchis is done asking for permission.
