Sam Fender has postponed his remaining shows for 2024 due to vocal issues.
He's done so on doctor's orders, with the singer-songwriter taking to social media to apologise for pulling the second of two successive dates at Glasgow's OVO Hydro tonight (December 17), and a hometown show at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on Friday (December 20).
In a statement, the North Shields artist said he recently had the flu and revealed he had damaged his right vocal cord:
"Glasgow and Newcastle, as most of you know I’ve had the flu for a few days now. Regardless of how compromised my voice was I did everything I could to get it in working order last night to put on the best show possible.
"Today I’ve had an ENT scope/camera down my throat and sadly I’ve haemorrhaged my right vocal cord, I’m absolutely heartbroken. This has been the best tour so far and all I want to do is get up and sing again for you all tonight. I’ve had two separate ENT doctors say if I perform tonight l’m risking lasting damage to my voice and I have been advised to be on vocal rest and not use my voice for a prolonged length of time until it heals.
"I’ve done everything by the book this tour living like a monk, it’s so unlucky. I’m so, so sorry to all of you who are on your way tonight. We’re trying to figure out a way to reschedule for you all, more news soon."
The postponed dates are yet to be rescheduled, and the UK and European shows in the spring and summer remain unaffected.
Fender is on the road ahead of the release of his third album, 'People Watching', which is due out on February 21 via Polydor. He recently shared the singles Wild Long Lie and the title track.
His People Watching Tour will continue in March, before his biggest headline show to date at London Stadium on June 6, and a trio of hometown concerts at Newcastle’s St. James’ Park on June 12, 14 and 15. £1 from every ticket will be donated to the Music Venue Trust in support of grassroots venues.
He'll play New York's Webster Hall on February 11 and has a short run of North American dates in the diary for April. In the summer, he'll play Germany's Hurricane and Southside festivals, and Rock Werchter festival in Belgium. Tickets are on sale now.
