The dancey, mid-tempo pop track marks a notable switch in style, with the four-time Grammy Award-winner showcasing a more summery, uplifting sound compared to his signature heartfelt acoustic ballads.
Having began in the studio with Sheeran's Swedish/Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh, the song is influenced by Salmanzadeh heritage and its title is a Persian term of endearment that translates to "my dear" or "my beloved". Sheeran explained:
"Even though it’s completely different to anything that I’ve ever done before, Azizam feels familiar to me. I wanted to create a party atmosphere in a song and Ilya Salmanzadeh, who I worked with on the track, helped bring that to life. He was so inspiring to work with."
The song serves as the lead single from the British singer-songwriter's forthcoming eighth studio album, 'Play', with further details on that to be released soon.
Last year, the 34-year-old released a live album titled '+-=÷× (Tour Collection: Live)', and the compilation '+-=÷× (Tour Collection)', which comprised his biggest songs from the decade-spanning mathematical album era, including 2011's '+', 2014's 'x', 2017's '÷', 2021's '=' and 2023's '-'.
He'll resume his Mathematics World Tour this summer, with shows lined up across Europe between between May 30 and September. Tickets are on sale now.
UPDATE 07/04: Sheeran has joined the line-up for California's Coachella festival, where he'll perform on Mojave Stage on the Saturday of Weekend Two, April 19.
