The artist formally known as Cat Stevens has announced some UK tour dates, the first proper tour in 33 years. Now known as Yusuf Islam, the singer will be playing a selection of Cat Stevens songs along with some Yusuf numbers. The newer songs will include tracks taken from his new musical ‘Moonshadow’. Click here for tickets.
Born as Steven Demetre Gregoriou in London, Yusuf was brought up within getting-to distance of London’s West End and his first dream was to make musicals. He got close when he became Cat Stevens and made such hits as ‘Wild World’, ‘Father and Son’ and ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’.
That dream got put on hold when he converted to Islam in 1977, auctioned his guitars to charity and dedicated his life to helping people in the Muslim community. He did a pretty impressive job at it, winning three awards for peace, including the 2003 World Peace Award.
He gradually returned to music during the 1990’s, and in 2006, released the album ‘An Other Cup’, followed by the 2009 album ‘Roadsinger.’ In February 2010, his semi-autobiographical musical will be debuted in Northampton’s Price of Wales Theatre and, if successful, will get a West End Run. Took some time but he got there in the end.
And these are his tour dates:
Nov 15 - Dublin, The O2
Nov 23 - Birmingham NIA
Dec 05 - Echo Arena, Liverpool
Dec 08 - Royal Albert Hall, London
