Named after the scary clown-thing from It, hard-core punk band Pennywise draw in roaring crowds and are one of the go-to bands for sports games music. Something about the frenzied, adrenaline-sloshing pace of their music appeals to sports fans; their eminently chant-able track ‘Bro Hymn’ is the theme and goal song for sports clubs world-wide. They released their latest compilation ‘Let Them Know’ in September. Click Here to Compare & Buy Pennywise Tickets
They began small, playing local back-yard keg parties in their home town of Hemosa Beach. With the help of their friend, Marc Theodore of Theologan records, they put together an EP, ‘A Word From the Wise’ which found its way to a college DJ who passed it on to Brett Gurewitz, the Guitarist and songwriter for Bad Religion who was starting up his own label, Epitaph Records, and he signed them.
Pennywise stuck with Epitaph, even though salavating big-label execs were trying to woo them during the mid-nineties punk resurgence. Their 1991 self-titled album did well. In ’93 ‘Unknown Road’ did better and they continued their winning streak with ‘About Time’ in 1995.
Tragedy struck the band in 1996 with the death of Bass player, Jason Thirsk. They kept it together, got a new bassist in and continued to steadily increase their fan-base with new albums and appearances that included headlining at the Vans Warped Tour in 2007.
The latest minor hitch for Pennywise is the departure of lead singer, Jim Lindberg this August. Ignite front-man Zoli Teglas is filling in whilst the band search for a replacement for Lindberg.
Whoever the new singer will be, you can catch him... or her... and the rest of Pennywise on:
