Just as classic album ‘London Calling’ reaches its 30th anniversary, legendary punk rock group The Clash have decided to sell off sketches, drawings and designs of the iconic 1979 album cover.

Hailed for their song writing The Clash were never really the same as other punk acts. Almost from day one they were always very aware of their own heritage and were constantly dropping in references to rockabilly, soul and reggae into their frantic shows. The band often experimented with new material, taking chances that no other act of their generation would dream of doing.

The influences began to seep through and most evidently perhaps in the creative masterpiece that is ‘London Calling’. Each track seems to move from one to another effortlessly. From roots of reggae to lounge bar jazz the album is a clear indication that The Clash were a band eager to experiment without losing their grip on the core ingredients that made them who they were.

London Calling

The album was immediately hailed as a classic. With its striking shot of bass player Paul Simonon smashing his bass to the ground, the album cover artwork was completed with lettering that referenced the first Elvis Presley album. Odd you may think, placing themselves in linage with The King, but lets not forget this was punk and even though this move was the least punk thing they could do it was also the most rebellious! The record sleeve has since become a hugely inspirational design.

The lot is expected to raise £70,000 at Bonham’s London auction on December 16th and is available to view at the auction’s Knightsbridge saleroom from December 13th.
