When we hear the two words “Christmas Single” we usually get the irritating feeling that we will soon be avoiding the sound of some young puppet, fresh from “X-Factor”, all over the radio spoiling what was probably once a great song. But it seems Cowell and Co. could be up against a much more worthy contender for the top spot this year as Las Vegas glamour indie stars, The Killers, are hopefully here to save us!
Whereas most bands shy away from the festive season due to its credibility by-pass, The Killers, seem to rejoice in some Yule-time and have released three successive Christmas singles. Last year the band released a special track featuring Elton John, this year, last Tuesday, 1st December, the band announced details of their fourth single. Working with charity (RED) to ensure that all proceeds from the download will head straight to the Global Fund to battle AIDs in Africa.
Presenting the unusual track title of ‘Happy Birthday Guadalupe’ and a mariachi sound, the band has teamed up with Wild Light, a four piece US indie band, and Mariachi El Bronx to feature on the single. Two bands that opened for The Killers during their recent tour. “We’re thrilled to be releasing our fourth Christmas song with (RED),” The Killers front man Brandon Flowers said. “(RED), through the Global Fund programmes it supports, has made great strides in providing care to those affected by AIDS throughout Africa, and its our honour to continue to contribute to that cause”.
The Killers spent a hefty part of 2009 on the road promoting their latest album ‘Day And Age’, the group also headlined T in the Park and appeared at many of the summer festivals before announcing they were to take a break in order to write new material.
The Killers new single ‘Happy Birthday Guadalupe’ is available now.
