The modern battle for the human soul between man and machine has been the concern of sci-fi and Fear Factory for some time. They expressed this concern by death growling into a mic with a sound like Taz vomiting fish-heads onto a tree-stump, then splitting up. They’re mostly back together now and have announced a tour. Fear factory are a band who have changed from death metal to industrial through to whatever they are now, polarising fans and the band itself but usually doing something interesting and new that has changed the metal scene along the way. Despite what I said about their death growling above, they’re actually noted for combining throat singing with clean vocals in a genre-defining fashion.

Most shockingly for their original fans, their last album, the appropriately named ‘Transgression’ contains elements of pop music. The forthcoming new album ‘Mechanise’ is an unknown quantity, however lead singer Burton C. Bell reject claims that they’re selling out to the music machine and getting more poppy. The first single from Mechanise will be ‘Powershifter’, which is a duet with the Minogue sisters. Other tracks on the album will feature the vocal talents of Rick Astley, Kanye West and Jedward. Bell’s new unisex perfume range “Resistance is Fruity” is to be debuted in the summer.

Fear Factory are due to play

Feb 16 - Manchester Academy
Feb 17-Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton
Feb 18 - Garage, Glasgow
Feb 19 - Camden Electric Ballroom
