Back in the day, Nada Surf’s record label appeared to be trying to turn them into a covers band. The band put up a fight, were dropped by the label, did their own thing, became crazy popular and put out a further three successful albums. Their old Label’s official position is ‘not bothered’. We think they’re lying. Click Here to Compare & Buy Nada Surf Tickets
Ironically, the post-grunge rockers new USA tour features songs from their newest album, ‘If I had a Hi-fi’ which is an album of covers. It is likely that the new album will feature heavily in their British dates.
The band have said they’ve put together a section of songs they’ve always liked or are just crazy about at the moment. So the new album is essentially an expensive mix-tape. Anyone remember mix-tapes? Waiting by the radio for the latest song, fingers hovering over play and record or getting the trusty fridge-sized twin tape player out for old songs… Mix discs the kids would call them now, though that sounds more like a back-injury. Who am I kidding? Nowadays, people just share playlists.
10 years down the line, people will use Microsoft Telepathy (TM) to share the experience of just having listened to a playlist via brain implants whilst simultaneously downloading 15 wanka-bytes of randomly computer-generated music for their external USB-brain to listen to. Sigh. I miss mix-tapes.
So, songs Nada Surf have covered for the album are an eclectic bunch, as mix tapes traditionally are. They include numbers from Kate Bush, Dwight Twiley and the Go-Betweens.
