Rock gods The Who are planning to play a ‘mash-up’ of their legendary hits at their anticipated performance at the forthcoming Superbowl half-time show.
In the history books of British rock music, there are not many bigger chapters than those written about The Who. One of the most challenging and successful groups, the band became legends through the years of performing, including landmark gigs such as Monterey and Woodstock. Exiling from the RnB scene to producing stunning concept albums, the band are still hugely popular across the world.
As one of the biggest live attractions on the planet, The Who have been chosen to entertain the crowds at the upcoming Superbowl half time event. An American Football institution the Superbowl is one of the world’s most watched sporting events.
However it has not been an enjoyable build up for the band, with members of certain children’s rights groups protesting Pete Townshend’s involvement. The Who plan to play regardless of the controversy and in a recent interview the guitar virtuoso spoke out about what the band was planning to play.
Expected to draw on the full force of the band’s career to date. The Who are set to include some of their most classic tracks in the set. “We’re kinda doing a mashup of stuff,” Townshend told Billboard. “A bit of ‘Baba O’Riley,’ a bit of ‘Pinball Wizard,’ a bit of the close of ‘Tommy,’ a bit of ‘Who Are You,’ and a bit of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again.’ It works — it’s quite a saga.”
Revealing more details about the performance, the guitarist noted that these tracks have a “celebratory vibe” about them. Townshend also added that he hoped the audience would “go a bit wild if they wanted to.”
Last year Bruce Springsteen had the opportunity to stun the Superbowl’s crowds with the half time show. The performance was a huge success at the time but later sparked furious debate after it emerged that only the star’s vocals were live at the event and the music was mimed.
As yet, it is not known if The Who will be playng completely live or whether some elements of the performance will be pre-recorded.
