Australian artist Gurrumul has been forced to cancel his upcoming European tour due to illness, it was announced today. The double-platinum selling and award-winning singer/songwriter will remain at home with his family in North East Arnhem Land under medical supervision.
Ticket holders for Gurrumul's headline shows should apply for refund from point of purchase.
Following the release of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu's debut solo eponymous album in Australia, Gurrumul picked up a string of awards and in 2009 the Sydney Morning Herald pronounced that Gurrumul is "...the greatest voice this continent has ever recorded." The pan-European release of 'Gurrumul' saw the album topping the World Music charts across the continent.
The North Australian native, blind from birth, grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. A former Yothu Yindi and Saltwater Band member Gurrumul sings almost exclusively in his indigenous Australian language. With no written word in his Yolngu culture Gurrumul takes the role of storyteller, recounting stories that are 50,000 years old, tales of life and wisdom that have been handed down through the generations.
