New Orleans’s The Soul Rebels Brass Band are to release their new album ‘Unlock Your Mind’ on 12th September. The album blends traditional New Orleans-style brass music with elements of soul, hip-hop and funk. During their appearance at last year’s London Jazz Festival, the band were filmed by the BBC performing their version of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ while crossing the city’s Golden Jubilee Bridge – watch the full video below.
The Soul Rebels Brass Band were formed in New Orleans by founding members Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, who were both previously part of the city’s iconic Dejean’s Young Olympia Brass Band. Speaking about The Soul Rebels’ music, LeBlanc said: “We wanted to make our own sound without disrespecting the brass tradition, so we knew we had to break away.”
‘Unlock Your Mind’ features guest appearances from Trombone Shorty and The Meters’ Cyril Neville and Leo Nocentelli. It was Neville that originally gave The Soul Rebels their name when the band supported The Neville Brothers at one of their earliest gigs.
The Soul Rebels Brass Band have previously performed alongside the likes of Arcade Fire, The Roots, Bootsy Collins, James Brown, Counting Crows and Green Day.
