The King of Grime himself Wiley has opened up about his decision to leak his brand new album ‘The Ascent’, two weeks prior to it’s release on April 1st.
The star, who’s signed to Warner Records, was apparently unhappy with iTunes and his label after finding out that a version of one of the albums tracks - entitled ‘Rubicon’ - which had been uploaded to iTunes ahead of release was in fact the wrong one.
After demanding it be changed, and receiving no support, he threatened to leak his album - and less than an hour later, he’d uploaded it online. His Twitter feed tells the story - check out his tweets below.
Although the album has since been taken down from the net, his Twitter was quickly bombarded with messages from fans raving about it - with some claiming it's the record of the year. The record follows his first #1 single ‘Heatwave’ last year - and will apparently be his last before he retires.
He told MTV recently: “Even though getting to the top of the charts is a big deal, people forget that I’ve been doing music for 15 years now and, yeah, I could keep releasing music and chasing another hit, but I want my next project after The Ascent album to be my last – I’m planning on retiring around the end of 2014 or 2015.
“I just want to Alex Ferguson it and just leave things there! [Laughs]. By then things might have changed in the industry; I really can’t predict the future, but I know that me and Warner [Records] have got our last album to do and it’s in writing. I’ll be around 38-years old so that’s cool – I’ll just be stretched out chilling by the time I get to 39.”
