London Nightclub Cable Shut Down By Network Rail

Thursday, 02 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

London’s much-loved Cable nightclub has been forced to close down, following a long legal battle with Network Rail.

Anyone in the UK who loves dance music may have been lucky enough to enjoy a night out in the club, which is situated in the tunnels under London Bridge railway station - it’s seen some of the world’s biggest DJs and acts performing inside it’s walls over the years, and was often cited as one of their favourite places to play.

But, following two years of legal battles with Network Rail - who believe they need the space of the club to redevelop the London Bridge station - they’ve been forced to shut.

The nightclub posted a message on their website last night, along with a video of Network Rail cutting through the shutters of the club, and photos of their bailiffs turning up outside.

Their message reads:

“It is with a huge amount of sadness that we announce Cable has closed with immediate effect. We have been forced to close following two years of ongoing legal battles with Network Rail, who took possession of the venue this morning with an entry order, putting us out of business and leaving our 70 staff without jobs. This is due to them allegedly requiring the space back for the redevelopment of London Bridge station. It is an utterly devastating blow to what is a much loved, hugely successful, well respected music venue and media business.

“This is not only a huge loss to the loyal fans and staff of Cable, but to London's clubbing community as a whole. With enormous pride, we delivered the very best talent in an environment that upheld the history of the early SE1 rave scene and supported as many musical styles as possible. We are obviously devastated and still in shock by the news and know there will be questions. As you can appreciate, there is much work to be done and many arrangements to be made behind the scenes.”

They’ve also promised fans with tickets to their future events will be taken care of, and that they need not worry - more information on this matter will be released soon. For now, you can check out a video of Network Rail cutting through the shutters embedded below.

What do you think of the news? We’re personally very upset at the loss of such a great venue, especially in circumstances such as these - music is way more important than train station redevelopments! Let us know your opinion in the comment box below.
