Daft Punk On EDM: 'We Thought It Was All Just One Guy!'

Thursday, 16 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

French house duo Daft Punk have revealed their views on EDM - and confessed that they used to think that all EDM was written by just one person!

The pair are gearing up for the release of their hugely-anticipated new album ‘Random Access Memories’ (out May 20th), which you can currently listen to on iTunes for free - click here to read our coverage of their stream.

Having spent a whole load of time talking to press about their new record, they were quizzed by NME about other music - including deadmau5, Skrillex, and EDM (Electronic Dance Music, if you didn’t know!) itself. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of Daft Punk, told the site:

“I don't know EDM artists or the albums. At first I thought it was all just one guy, some DJ called EDM. Maybe it's just one guy called Eric David Morris! EDM is energy only. It lacks depth. You can have energy in music and dance to it but still have soul.”

Asked about their opinions on the likes of deadmau5 and Skrillex, the pair replied:

“Deadmau5? No. I wouldn't listen to deadmau5 for pleasure. Skrillex we have a lot of respect for. He's said that he saw our live show with the pyramid in 2007 and it made him want to make music, but it feels like he's not copying our formula. He might be the kid that breaks the cycle, but we don't listen to a lot of electronic music. We never did.”

What do you think of their comments - are you surprised they aren’t into their EDM? Leave us a comment in the box below. Keep your eyes peeled on Stereoboard for more Daft Punk news, too - we’ll let you know if they decide to take ‘Random Access Memories’ on tour!
