Death Cab For Cutie Unveil Video For New Track Million Dollar Loan

Tuesday, 11 October 2016 Written by Laura Johnson

Death Cab For Cutie have unveiled a video for their new track, Million Dollar Loan.

The song is the first in the 30 days, 30 songs project, which features tracks "written and recorded by artists for a Trump-free America". According to a statement on their Facebook page, Million Dollar Loan was inspired by a quote from the US presidential candidate during his campaign last year.

Million Dollar Loan is the result of a collaboration/arrangement process we as DCFC have never attempted before. After writing the song I recorded only acoustic guitars and vocals. I then sent these tracks to Dave, Zac, Nick and Jason. I gave them instructions to write, record and send back parts for MDL with the caveat that no one was allowed to hear what the others were doing. Upon receiving everyone's work I was really amazed at how well everything worked together and arranged the song accordingly.

Lyrically, Million Dollar Loan deals with a particularly tone deaf moment in Donald Trump's ascent to the Republican nomination. While campaigning in New Hampshire last year he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a "small loan of million dollars" from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. Like it was no big deal. It truly disgusted me. I remember thinking, "surely THIS will be the turning point. To refer to an amount of money most working class people will never see in their lifetime as 'small' illustrates a shocking lack of perspective. Assuredly now everyone will see this man for the charlatan he truly is." And yet, here we are.

Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of The United States of America and in no way, shape or form represents what America truly stands for. He is beneath us. On November 8th we Americans must show ourselves and the world we are BETTER than this. - Ben
