You Me At Six - Night People (Album Review)

Monday, 09 January 2017 Written by Laura Johnson

You Me At Six have made it abundantly clear that their new record, ‘Night People’, is not like their others. Vocalist Josh Franceschi cited influences ranging from Frank Ocean to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin when discussing its gestation and the result is a record that dips its toe in the deeper end of the rock pool without ever becoming fully submerged.

The title track, which the quintet confess is a statement of self description,  kicks things off with a classic rock feel before they raise a punk middle finger with Plus One, a short offering packed with ideas and wailing guitars. “I don’t say much with poise or grace, but I’ll come of age, in this town on this day,” a defiant Franceschi sings. It’s sure to leave a few cynics open-mouthed.

The momentum it helps build alongside the U2-esque Heavy Soul comes to a grinding halt with ballad Take On The World, though. The track drags things down with some predictable cliches before ‘Night People’ picks up again on the pop-punk Brand New and really hits its stride on Swear, where the band wear their newly-discovered ‘70s influences on their sleeve.

These new elements rear their head most notably on Make Your Move and Spell It Out, where ominous keys and guitars contribute to a slow, controlled, intense build where previous releases might have opted for instant impact. “My darkest days have come and pulled me under, I want my moment in the sun” Francheschi sings, before declaring “no one here is bulletproof”.

‘Night People’ signifies a more mature sound from You Me At Six and will likely be viewed as a watershed release in their discography. Though they may not be breaking any moulds, these former pop-punks have made a bold move in taking a step back from the scene that spawned them, and harboured many a musical career beyond its expiration date.
