Reggae act UB40 are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut seminal album ‘Signing Off’ this year. Announcing an extensive list of UK tour dates, the group will perform the whole album live during the tour of intimate venues.
Hailed as a superb album upon its release in August 1980, ‘Signing Off’ has earned iconic status as one of the greatest reggae albums ever released by a British band.
Taking its name from the unemployment form, ‘Signing Off’ was warmly welcomed by many music fans, including the followers of punk and the 2-Tone movement. Its reggae and dub sound detailed the difficult UK life and times of the early 1980’s, as Britain moved into the Thatcher years.
Hitting the Number Two spot in the Top Ten, ‘Signing Off’ eventually stayed on the charts for a total of 71 weeks. It has since been awarded Platinum status and brought us timeless UB40 classics such as ‘King/Food For Thought’.
The album’s cover-art of the replica bright yellow unemployment card was how the Birmingham band took their name. The yellow card is the ‘Unemployment Benefit, Form 40’.
UB40 will take their special album show to the road this autumn, kicking-off a massive UK tour in Liverpool on October 25th. The tour rolls though a number of intimate venues before finishing in Southampton on November 19th.
