MGMT - O2 Academy, Bournemouth - Sept 24th 2010 (Live Review)

Brooklyn based band MGMT made a record, called it Oracular Spectacular and sold a shed load of copies. Big hitters ‘Kids’, ‘Electric Feel’ and ‘Youth’ saw them burst into the mainstream, pick up a Grammy nomination and cement a place in Rolling Stones top 20 albums of the decade. The success of MGMT can be nailed down to ‘Oracular Spectacular’ and the success of its catchy, irreverent electro indie single releases. Newest offering ‘Congratulations’ however is entirely different.

Although stand out tracks ‘Song for Dan Tracy’ and ‘It’s Working’ were well received at Bournemouth’s O2 last night the majority of the crowd were waiting for the big guns to come out. ‘Congratulations’ acted as the filler to an enjoyable if somewhat uninspiring night at the O2. Band Member Ben Goldwasser has himself openly admitted that the band ‘couldn’t write another Kids’.

If last night’s outing at the Bournemouth O2 is anything to go by then that is a great shame. The sold out crowd dutifully sang along and swayed to the bands modest electro synth melodies but all in all the big cheers were reserved for the songs that put MGMT on the map in the first place.

Saving Kids for the encore, MGMT made sure the crowd stayed attentive throughout the low-key pastoral numbers and more esoteric wig-outs. The crowd was sent home happy but it remains to be seen how long MGMT can dine out on the remnants of their past success.
