Taylor Swift's third studio release passed the million-unit mark during its first week of sales in the United States. The record has achieved the best first week sales since 2005, beating the sales records of superstars such as Katy Perry, Rihanna, Eminem and Lil Wayne.
The country star sold 1,047,000 copies of ‘Speak Now’ during last week (ending October 31st). This number is the largest sales week since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" entered the charts with 1,141,000 sales in March 2005.
On top of this impressive figure, ‘Speak Now’ qualifies as the biggest album sales week for a woman in over a decade. The last female to break such a target was Britney Spears’ ‘Oops! I Did It Again’, which sold 1,319,000 copies in early 2000. Swift has now joined an exclusive club of only four women who have ever notched up so many first-week sales in music sales history.
After hearing the news, Taylor Swift wrote on Twitter to thank her fans: "I... Can't... Believe... This... You guys have absolutely lit up my world. Thank you." The achievement is a marked improvement from her second album, ‘Fearless’, which debuted at No. 1 in November 2008 with 592,000 copies.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Swift is to join the likes of Britney Spears, Madonna and Mariah Carey in releasing her own perfume. Speaking in a conference about the decision, Swift confessed: "I have always loved how fragrance can shape a memory - the way certain scents remind you of events and people that are imprinted in your thoughts. Lately I've been having fun experimenting with combining some of my favorite scents, so I'm really excited about working with Elizabeth Arden to develop my own unique fragrance."
The fragrance is expected for release in autumn next year.
