We Are Scientists (Acoustic Set) - Village Underground, London - November 18th 2010 (Live Review)

Familiar with seeing the Village Underground rammed with sweat riddled revelers, it’s was a novel feeling to wonder straight to the front of the polite onlookers for We Are Scientists’ acoustic set during an UnLtd event last Thursday.
They took to the stage with only a guitar, a shaker, some wine and Keith’s dodgy red beanie/tea cozy. Chris announces, “This set is going to be very casual, very tight...very sexy”, and the tone is set for the evening as they kick off on ‘Rules Don’t Stop Me’.
Being renowned for their jovial dispositions, it’s no surprise to see the three crack up at each other’s singing expressions, as they stand around a single microphone, faces inches apart. What makes this even funnier is that through the massive grins and giggling, the sound doesn’t suffer in the slightest.
Furthermore, the Barbara tracks lend well to an acoustic setting, much to the appreciation of the placid audience. ‘Chick Lit’ and ‘Impatience’ follow and it becomes apparent that beneath their comedic stylings are very talented musicians that can adapt their sound on a whim.
Part of the audience participation for the evening included someone in the crowd handing Chris a coconut taken from a stand in the venue, which he uses as a shaker for ‘I Don’t Bite’ after taking the time to describe the virtues of said nut.
Keith, Chris and Dani then concluded their 30 minute set with ‘After Hours’ and departed, confident in their ability to make short gigs memorable. Amidst their nonchalant performance, there’s a brilliance about them, which keeps We Are Scientists prominent on the UK indie scene as they come to the end of touring on the Barbara album. So whether it’s further touring or a new album on the cards for 2011, we’ll no doubt be seeing them back on British soil, where they could cover Celine Dion tracks and still get an outstanding reception.
