Written by Rob Sleigh
Another year is nearly up and it’s time to have a quick look back at 2010 before we have a long look forward into 2011. As we left the Noughties, 2010 brought us another exciting and eventful year in music. Bands like Mumford and Sons, The Drums and, of course, the xx have been among the new names that have given us plenty of good reasons to head out to the nearest gig venue or download another great album to our iPods. On the other hand, we've had old favourites like the Libertines, Biffy Clyro, Rage Against the Machine and Guns n' Roses, who have reared their ugly heads and, once again, astounded us - for the right reasons or otherwise.
Right, that's enough looking back for now. Time for the most important and much more exciting part - what's next? What delights are lying in wait for us over the approaching twelve months? Obviously names like Take That, Foo Fighters and Beady Eye are going to make an appearance on more than one occasion next year, but what about the others that you may not already be familiar with? What about the next Mercury Prize winners or the festival headliners of the future?
Here it is - Stereoboard's Top Tips for 2011. We've picked ten of the best up-and-coming bands that we think you should be listening out for. Those that are almost certainly going to be packing out arenas and crashing ticket sites over the coming months. If you haven't heard of them yet, you soon will. So go and track them down. Kicking off proceedings is the Joy Formidable:
The Joy Formidable
This North Wales trio have already proved to be a big hit at this summer’s festivals, although they are yet to release a full-length album. However, those of you who have been waiting a while are finally in luck – the Joy Formidable are to release their first LP ‘The Big Roar’ in January and it is to be preceded by the single ‘Austere’. Anyone familiar with the group’s 2009 mini-album ‘A Balloon Called Moaning’ will have already heard this track and may have even caught a glimpse of its controversial – and unofficial – original video, which was banned from YouTube in 2008. They’ve also got a big tour coming up in February. Click Here to Compare & Buy The Joy Formidable Tickets
Kassidy
Glasgow-based folk-rockers Kassidy play a sunny blend of 60s-influenced guitar music and modern pop-infused indie rock, as can be heard on recent single ‘Oh My God’. They are another band to have had a successful run at the festivals this year, which will doubtlessly help out when their debut album ‘Hope St.’ is uncovered in March. Mona
This four-piece from Nashville, Tennessee sound almost exactly like what you’d expect a band from Nashville, Tennessee to sound like. Anyone that has heard the singles ‘Trouble on the Way’ and ‘Listen to Your Love’ will almost certainly agree with the Kings of Leon comparisons that have been thrown around recently. Mona share a very similar brand of Southern indie rock with their more well-known fellow Tennesseans. So, with a debut album due sometime in 2011, expect them to follow further in the Followills’ footsteps very soon. Click Here to Compare & Buy Mona Tickets
Morning Parade
Essex’s Morning Parade have been playing a synth-driven and dance-inspired style of indie music since their formation in Harlow in 2008. Following the recent release of their debut single ‘Under the Stars’, Morning Parade have already received a great deal of attention and are being hailed as one of the bands to watch in 2011. With a new string of live dates lined up for the New Year and with an album to follow, this five-piece look set to create a huge amount of excitement during the coming year. Neon Indian
Neon Indian is the alias of Mexican-born electronic solo artist Alan Palamo. Having already released debut album ‘Psychic Chasms’ in 2009, Palamo and his live band have received a significant amount of success over in the States and are now getting ready to reach further afield. Following the album’s UK release earlier this year, as well as some live shows, Neon Indian are currently working on the follow-up to ‘Psychic Chasms’ and are likely to bring their homegrown success abroad upon its release.
Neon Trees
From Neon Indian to Neon Trees. Here is another band from that side of the pond, although these guys play a slightly more conventional style of rock music. After supporting the Killers back in 2008, Neon Trees experienced their first taste of success upon the release of their debut album ‘Habits’ earlier this year. The album, a mixture of alternative rock and catchy pop choruses, included the single ‘Animal’, which made it into the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and Number One in the US Alternative Rock Chart. ‘Habits’ is due for release over here in February and coincides with a number of UK tour dates, so Neon Trees will no doubt be looking to expand their success across the pond. Sucioperro
Scottish trio Sucioperro, which means “dirty dog” in Spanish, have been around since 2002 and already have three albums out. The band’s frontman JP Reid is also well-known for being one half of Marmaduke Duke with Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil. With a fourth album ‘The Heart String and How to Pull On It’ and a new tour due in February, surely it’s Sucioperro’s turn to make it to the big time. As Biffy found out, it’s better late than never. Summer Camp
London-based electronic indie-pop duo Summer Camp are another homegrown British act to be making headlines in the latter part of 2010. They released their debut EP ‘Young’ in September, shortly after some successful performances at Reading and Leeds festivals. Although they don’t appear to have any plans for the time being, expect much more from them in 2011.
Warpaint
If this all-girl four-piece have managed to pass you by during 2010, you obviously haven’t been paying enough attention. After making waves in the LA rock scene for six years, Warpaint have finally brought their psychedelic brand of experimental indie over to the UK. Their debut album was released just a couple of months ago after a number of small gigs and festival appearances and now they are planning a full-scale UK tour for next May. Warpaint are almost definitely going to be one of the bands of 2011. Click Here to Compare & Buy Warpaint Tickets
Young the Giant
Californian indie-rockers Young the Giant aren’t the kind of band you’d normally expect to find on heavy rock label Roadrunner Records. The group signed with the label last year and released their debut album over in the States in October. The album is due out over here in May and the band will be preceding its release with a number of shows in February as part of HMV’s Next Big Thing. A sure sign that Young the Giant are likely to be among 2011’s actual next big things. Click Here to Compare & Buy Young the Giant Tickets
