Cold War Kids - Mine Is Yours (Album Review)

It’s been nearly 5 years since Cold War Kid’s acclaimed debut album 'Robbers and Cowards', and after their messy second album 'Loyalty to Loyalty' we’ve been hoping for the third album to prove a worthy successor to the first.

'Mine is Yours' marks the first time Cold War Kids have asked for the help of an outside producer (Jacquire King, who has worked with Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse), and it shows in the glossy guitar sounds and anthemic vocals. At first I interpreted this as the band losing the rough edges that had made them so special in the first place, and while it’s true that they sound much cleaner, perhaps you could even say ‘safer’, the songs are still well written and catchy.

ImageThe new direction does however feel a little bland. There are thousands of indie bands out there already doing similar songs, and Cold War Kids previously shone through the murk by being so raw sounding and cynical, so while the new album isn’t innately bad, it treads no new ground.

Stereoboard Album Rating: 6/10
