Stereoboard Talk To Twenty Twenty Ahead of UK Tour Supporting The Wanted (Interview)

Interview with Twenty Twenty

Twenty Twenty have had a jam-packed 2 years to say the least; the trio hailing from Essex have notched up top ten hits in the Indie Singles and Music DVD charts, toured with mainstream royalty such as The Saturdays, Tinchy Stryder and Scouting for Girls and are now about to release their first mini album entitled ‘Small Talk’ on May 2nd. This level of experience is quite impressive for a group that were only formed at the end of 2009 and signed last year. Tipped to be the next Busted, Twenty Twenty’s brand of rock-kissed pop has already earned them a legion of fans on Facebook that has reached the 53,000 mark. I caught up with them as they begin their latest string of gigs – this time supporting the Brit Award nominated The Wanted on a 16 date tour around the country.

Twenty Twenty (who surprisingly enough are all in their twenties) consist of brothers Sam (vocals/guitar) and Jack (vocals and bassist) Halliday and Sonny Watson Lang on drums. Just as any other band, music was something that they feel they were destined to do and they would play in schools, bars, and pubs – the usual haunts that define the story of most bands prior to being signed. They were playing for audiences of 5 to 5,000 people and according to Sam “every minute we were just concentrating on getting more and more gigs”. They are one of the many up and coming bands who have embraced social networking as the hub of their promotion by managing their own Facebook and MySpace pages which have huge followings. Their passion for performing is clear through speaking to them and as mentioned before, their touring track record is not be sneered at. It’s all been a whirlwind for the boys who still can’t believe that they spent a month touring with The Saturdays whom they got to know well. They also cite Scouting for Girls as one of the groups who offered them constructive advice about being in a band. They have provided “words of wisdom and were all round really nice people” says Jack.

ImageComparisons have been drawn between Twenty Twenty and All Time Low as well with the newly revived McFly, but particularly with Busted, who after enjoying enormous success in the early noughties unexpectedly (to my utter post-adolescent dismay) split in 2005. Although they may look the same and on the surface sound the same, Twenty Twenty beg to differ. They define their sound as a lot more grown up than Busted and say that their influences, particularly when writing music are “not as cheesy as Busted…we don’t sing about ‘Year 3000’ or about crashing weddings”. They have also supported former Busted member James Bourne on his solo tour and receive his full backing. Twenty Twenty see themselves as more of a rock band but as the same time they wholly acknowledge that it would not be the worst thing in the world if they were to be successful as Busted, who at their peak received 2 Brit Awards.

As mentioned at the start the boys have their first ‘mini album’ all set for release next month with 8 tracks. According to Jack the band are “heavily involved with the songs and work with writers and producers. Every track is an original song and we are involved in each stage”. The album maybe a mini one, but the production is far from small scaled – with help from pop purveyors such as Julian Emery who has orchestrated a lot of McFly’s success and the legendary Guy Chambers who is famously responsible for many of Robbie William’s hits, the album sets high expectations of what to expect from trio. They have also recorded with the producers of Alphabeat in Denmark. When asked about what their favourite tracks from the album are Jack selected ‘Get Down’, Sonny couldn’t decide and Sam chose their latest single ‘Love to Life’ which is out on April 17th.

2011 needless to say going to be a busy year for Twenty Twenty who plan to continue touring and play at some high profile festivals this summer! Good luck boys!
