American New Wave rockers The Cars have returned with their first studio album in over 24 years.
‘Move Like This’ slowly came to light at the end of 2009 as lead singer Ocasek considered how to proceed with his latest sheaf of lyrics, his first batch of material since 2005’s solo Nexterday. As he debated how to record he realized that his best option was the three players with whom he had the most symbiotic relationship.
“It totally clicked immediately,” singer Ric Ocasek says. “Everybody got right into it as if we had never stopped playing. After two days I thought, ‘Oh yeah, this is going to be cool.’”
This is the first time The Cars remaining members have worked together in a studio since the 1987 album “Door to Door”. The line up consists of Ocasek on lead vocals and guitar, David Robinson on drums, Elliot Easton on guitar and Greg Hawkes on keyboards. Lee and Hawkes split Bass duties after the passing away of original bassist Benjamin Orr in 2000.
Fans were treated to a preview of the new record when the invigorating ‘Blue Tip’ was released earlier in the year.
The album has been written entirely by Ocasek and produced with the help of Gareth ‘Jacknife’ Lee who has previously worked with the likes of U2 and R.E.M.
Lee is very fond of The Cars, and went on to say "I love The Cars. I love them – one of the most important bands in my life. Ric and I talked a lot on the phone, we emailed back and forth and then booked a studio. The Village in West L.A. Five songs in two sessions. They’re a unique group of musicians. Elliot Easton’s fluid playing is something to witness. He’s fast, melodic and aims like a sniper. Rare in lead guitarists. One of the best recording experiences I’ve had. There’s a freshness and clarity to The Cars and ‘Move Like This’ that most new bands don’t have. That’s pretty special."
The single is available from March 28th before the album ‘Move Like This’ is released on May 9th.
A 7” single will be made for Record Store Day on April 16th. It will feature the songs ‘Blue Tip’ and ‘Sad Song’.
The band has also worked on a new video for the track ‘Sad Song’, which you can see embedded below.
