Amoriste - The Mascot (Single Review)

Any song that features the iconic James Alexander Gordon, not just via lyrical mention, but also by featuring a soundbytes of him reading out scores from the nPower League Two during the closing seconds deserves nothing but an excellent review. The man is a king.

ImageSo, it’s a little bit Wombats, with stabbing piano and guitar chords accompanying the friendly and strong vocal. The drums keep a simple four/four and everything’s pretty nice and easy. Normally I would go on about how unoriginal and simple that is, but unoriginal isn’t bad every time. As long as it’s memorable for some reason, and this song features some excellent lyricism, and manages to maintain its guitar-pop roots without being pretentious, rehashed or boring.

I think of similar sounding bands: Kooks, The Feeling, and to an extent, Keane, and I think this song (while this isn’t actually that hard to pull off) is better than anything any of those three bands have put out. Not only that, but this song is designed to be played loudly outdoors in the hot summer sun, so it’s just as well festival season has just about arrived then.

So, for a first release, it’s not without its flaws. Originality is hard to achieve so I’ll let them off with that, but it’s not quite up there enough to be considered “great”, but this is a band who have the ideas and the ability to create something more. Amoriste have crafted a pretty little slab of music that deserves to be heard. Music purists and certain music magazine readers will probably hate it because it’s a happy song that sounds like it should be in the charts, but if it sounds like it should be in the charts, it sounds like something people would buy. So, for the minor flaws, it pulls off a victory then. In the words, paraphrased, by James Alexander Gordon himself:

Amoriste: One. Critics: Nil.
