Remember Outrun? That game where before you start a major race you hear that 8 bit “bip, bip, beeeeeeeep!!!” Well, that’s a reasonable description of the first few seconds of the first actual single from TEETH. What follows gets a little more layered and then a LOT more noisy. This is the epitome of lo-fi, with heavy synths, catchy melody and then the fuzziest, most primordial, crunching drums n overdrive guitar combo you’ll hear this year, and it’s in no way unpleasant.
Of course, if you grew up in the fifties and Frankie Laine is your sort of thing, then TEETH will probably give you nightmares. This isn’t accessible to everyone, and they make no effort to be. They just make music that is deeply layered, cleverly pieced together and gives you the sudden urge to get out your chairs and not dance but…flail wildly. This is the ultimate in letting go of your inhibitions.
Upon researching the band a little (which is currently easier to type than to do) I discovered an article that says they’d be the combination of Girls Aloud and New Young Pony Club which is wrong for two reasons. One, that would sound awful. Two, that comparison does not take in a fraction of the Atari-era noises on offer. Other comparisons I’ve read include Crystal Castles which is much closer to the mark, but CC have been known to just make an unbearable outlet of sound on occasion, which this isn’t anywhere close to. If they sound like anyone, they sound like no-one but themselves which is the only comparison that should be made to it.
There’s a few remixes on this CD, of which the Extreme Animals one with its Alex Kidd (the game, not the DJ) meets Super Mario beat that eventually progresses into one of the most thumping stompfests ever committed to MP3 is a serious highlight.
Put simply, if you want to listen to the future of computer-based, visceral, lo-fi scuzzy funk dance, then 'Care Bear' by TEETH is it. Good fun, but never childish, a brilliant mixture of blood, sweat and tears thrown into one three minute track. You won’t all like it, but those who do will absolutely love it.
Oh, and the video is something to behold…
