That's Outrageous, the latest coup by indie label Rise Records released their debut album on 19th July. Originally put together by former We Are In The Crowd founder Tom DeGrazia (who has since left the band), this New York outfit mix upbeat pop choruses with the hardcore element that is so familiar to Rise Records fans.
The intro, 'The Poughkeepsie Tapes' has a dance element mixed with a beautiful piano solo, but straight after this the pounding 'Headshot At The Ballet Recital sends a strong message that That's Outrageous are here to stay. With rip roaring screams and melodic choruses, 'Teenage Scream' does exactly what That's Outrageous promised it would do. With DeGrazia's clean vocals mixing perfectly with the brutal growls of Doriano Magliano, credit must also be given to producer Cameron Mizell (I See Stars, Memphis May Fire) who never pulls away from the hardcore aspect of the music that That's Outrageous fans know and love, yet infuses rap, pop, electronica and even dubstep into this new and refreshing album.
With catchy melodies throughout, and constant interchanging between clean and unclean vocals, on the first listen of this album it may seem that each song is pretty similar, but every track on the album has a feature that sets it apart. '#Winning' has a stunning chorus by clean vocalist Tom DeGrazia, and 'Star69' has a strong synth bassline which compliments the efforts of DeGrazia once more.
An incredibly auto-tuned entrance to the track 'Is It 2012 Yet?' is reminiscent of the first album by Attack Attack!, however That's Outrageous quickly set themselves apart from any other band with dubstep induced madness halfway through the track. The following track 'The New York Chainsaw Massacre' features fellow Rise Records artist Austin Carlile (Of Mice & Men) and is one of the highlights of the album. With crunching breakdowns and a much needed variation in vocals, 'Chainsaw Massacre' is a real stand-out track in the album. Although song titles such as 'RE: Why I Killed My Girlfriend' may seem pretty outrageous (see what I did there?), nearly every one of the tracks has some kind of message in, which shows that a lot of thought was put into this album and the message that it gives.
Although 'Teenage Scream' has a very short running time of 26:43, and the band are now without the clean vocalist featured on 'Teenage Scream', Tom DeGrazia, That's Outrageous offer an incredible amount of potential. 'Teenage Scream' is an energetic debut from That's Outrageous and offers a much needed variation in the genre. Now looking for a new clean vocalist, expect more genre collision from That's Outrageous in the near future.
