Mutya Buena has extraordinarily won her two-year legal battle with her former group, which means that she now has limited rights of use to the Sugababes name.
Buena, who left the Sugababes in December 2005, announced through her personal Facebook page that she had won the rights to the use of the official Sugababes name this morning. The change is also apparent on trade-marking website TMview, which lists Mutya Buena as the trademark owner of SUGABABES name for merchandising rights, classification 16. The win will see Buena potentially make hefty profits from the name on Sugababes merchandise.
Buena set her Facebook status this morning to read: “I won the official name of the Sugababes now!!! I deserve this! I’m over the moon! :D xxx”. It quickly received over 100 ‘likes’ from her friends and family, who are the only people who have access to the page. Mutya is later reported to have told her Facebook friends, "Excitement has died down all confirmed on fone jus wAitin for papers to b shown then I can b happy people love try bring down moods . No time no time off for a pint f*** it whose joinin loool".
Buena is one of three original members which are no longer part of the group, meaning the Sugababes has an entirely new line-up. It is known that Buena was unhappy at the continuation of the Sugababes after all three original members left – she said, following Kiesha Buchanan’s departure, that “It just means the Sugababes have ended.”
The current incarnation of Sugababes - Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen - are planning to release a new single and album later this year.
A spokesperson for the Sugababes told Stereoboard.com, "On the 21st April 2011, a decision was made by the Office For Harmonization In The Internal Market Trade (Trade Marks Department), wherein Sugababes successfully acquired the rights to the name “Sugababes” in all categories pertaining to the band’s areas of activity in the music, sound recording and entertainment industry."
"Mutya Buena was successful in acquiring rights to certain paper products in Class 16, namely, 'Paper, cardboard and goods made from these materials, not included in other classes; namely stationery, paper gift wrap and paper gift wrapping ribbons.'"
