Working With Kurt Cobain "A Pain In The Ass", Says 'Nevermind' Producer

Butch Vig, the producer who worked with Nirvana on their 1991 album Nevermind, has said that working with Kurt Cobain was a “pain in the ass” in the run up to the 20th anniversary of the album.

Nevermind is undoubtedly the band’s biggest and most popular record, having sold over 10million copies in the US (earning it a diamond status) and over 30million worldwide. But, despite its success, Butch Vig told the Rolling Stone how attempting to produce and master the album with Cobain was a large task.

“I'd be balancing the drums and the guitars,” said Vig, “and Kurt would come and say, 'Turn all the treble off. I want it to sound more like BLACK SABBATH.’ It was kind of a pain in the ass.”

“Kurt was charming and witty, but he would go through these mood swings. He would be totally engaged, then all of a sudden a light switch would go off and he'd go sit in the corner and completely disappear into himself. I didn't really know how to deal with that.”

Nevermind, the first album to feature superstar Dave Grohl, was released on September 24th in 1991, meaning its anniversary is a month yesterday. The celebrations will include a specially anniversary release of the album and a celebratory concert in Seattle.
