Following on from her work with The Irrepressibles, Moneytree and Haunted Stereo, Southampton singer/accordionist Anja McCloskey has decided to go solo, and releases her new single And Her Head/Impeccable on the 5th September.
And Her Head was inspired by a tragic event in the life of Anja’s grandfather, the man who sparked her interest in the accordion when she was just five years old. The song itself is an dramatic, romantic, earthy, moody blend of drums, vocals, accordions, violins and guitars, managing to create a sound that is all at once folky, modern and operatic. It’s not a lighthearted listen. Anja’s ethereal vocals merge with the rich and full-bodied sound of the accordion to give an eerie, mournful impression that will stay with you long after you've taken the headphones off.
Bolstered by the strong but gentle b-side, And Her Head is a confident single, and the accompanying video is worth a look too. Featuring a peculiar blood-streaked couple dancing in the woods, it perfectly captures the spirit of Anja’s music - a mixture of both the organic and the artistic.
