PJ Harvey’s latest LP ‘Let England Shake’ has enjoyed a 1,190% increase in sales after being named the winner of this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize last night (September 6th). According to online store Amazon.co.uk, the album has received a massive increase in purchases following on the prestigious awards ceremony in London.
‘Let England Shake’ is the second Mercury Prize win for Harvey, who also received the award in 2001 for her album 'Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea'. Speaking at the London ceremony yesterday, Harvey was unassuming in her words of thanks to the collected crowd.
She said: "Thank you for the recognition of my work on this album. It's also good to be here this evening. When I last won 10 years ago on September 11, 2001 I was watching the Pentagon burning from my hotel window.
Harvey continued: "So much has happened since then. This album took me a long time to write. It was very important to me. I wanted to make something meaningful, not just for myself but for other people, and hopefully to make something that would last."
Harvey also went on to praise Adele for her extraordinary vocals in sophomore album ‘21’, as well as praising Everything Everything after their live performance at the event.
Speaking about the incredible leap in sales, Paul Firth, head of music buying at Amazon said: “The Mercury Music Prize is an important award for any artist, new or established, and always has an immediate effect on sales. It will be interesting to see whether PJ Harvey will surpass Adele at the very top of the charts over the coming days.”
