Aperture Presents: Doc. Scott and Hamilton (Live Review) 2nd September 2011

After weeks and weeks of heavy headline bookings, ridiculously good resident sets and an array of new and fresh DJs, Aperture was ready to bring the noise with its second headliner since young Dan Aperture was appointed chief.

As usual, the night began with a queue full of the Cardiff’s finest fresh faced dancers and drinkers eager to get up to room one, where Helix was getting the party started as usual. Helix is a regular slot at Aperture nowadays and can always be trusted to lay down a solid set every time – which is why he is often seen gracing the prestigious decks of Clwb Ifor Bach. Check him out on Facebook, or give his homegrown tracks a listen through his Soundcloud. Also, a special shout out goes to Reuben MC, who, like every Friday night Aperture, used his unrivalled Rastafarian charm to interact with the crowd on different levels from 10pm-3am.

He was followed by Sundance, another resident that regularly rips the roof off the Welsh club. He took off where Helix left off, keeping the same vibe throughout his set with tunes like Villem’s ’Do You I Wanna’. His mixing sounded, as usual, crisp and comfortable on the ears as well as packed with tasty double drops throughout the set. Check out his latest mix here.

Preceding the legendary Doc. Scott was a man who needs no introduction; Aperture favourite DJ Kooley. He always brings the biggest of sets to the night and Friday was no different – once again he set the bar for the headliners, making sure every last one of us was in room 1 before 1am came around. And, as usual, he brought the freshest tracks with him too – if there’s a brand new tune that’s killing the DnB scene at the moment, you can guarantee it’ll be in Kooley’s set. The only DJs with better access to the biggest tracks are those like Doc. Scott and Hamilton, who were primed to take to the stage one after each other for the best two hours Aperture has seen for a while.

ImageDoc. Scott took a break from playing to huge audiences all over the world to showcase his ability to mix some of the hottest, darkest tracks of the year with some all time classics without the slightest of difficulty. Scott has killed it every time I’ve witnessed him play, and he played out a big selection of tunes yet again. His love for simplistic and minimal jungle beats and amen-infused darkness gives his sets a 10/10 skankability rating – and that’s the least you can expect from Aperture, who’ve booked Drumsound and Bassline Smith for the forthcoming Fresher’s Week festivities.

With Doc. Scott being the main headliner, and Hamilton a late addition to the bill, Hamilton certainly gave Scott a run for his money. While Scott’s set was full of his usual goodness, the latter absolutely destroyed the final slot of the night, rocking the house until the lights came on. He is really a man on fire at the moment, and with releases coming out here and there, appearances on Andy C’s iconic Nightlife 5 album and well over ten years of DJing experience, there’s not many names you’d rather see on the bill than Hamilton’s. Almost every tune he dropped got the crowd in full swing, especially his new release ‘Brainstorm’ – what a tune that one is. He ended what was yet another (I’ll never tire from saying it!) an absolutely awesome Aperture night – big thanks to Dan Aperture once again for providing us with what is by far the best drum and bass night in Wales. We caught up with Dan once again for a quick word:

“What needs to be said after tonight? Two headliners, three residents, five brilliant sets. I’d like to say thanks to Doc. Scott for tearing up Aperture once again and Hamilton for joining the bill so late, yet still putting on a storming set. And obviously, Kooley, Sundance and Helix for kicking off the party in style – we expect nothing less! All we’ve got to do now is wait for Drumsound and Bassline Smith (and the returning Speedo!) to roll around on the 23rd – see you all there!”
